Advice regarding coronavirus

Now that the first cases of the coronavirus have been detected in the Netherlands, there are many questions, including among employers. To prevent panic, we have listed the most important information.

As an employer, you must inform your staff about what they should do as soon as they experience any of the symptoms. Depending on your sector and the services or products you provide, you may need to tailor this information, but below is the basic information that can be used.

Symptoms
People with the new coronavirus have a fever and respiratory complaints, such as coughing or shortness of breath. This new coronavirus differs from the known coronaviruses that occur in humans.

What to do
If you think you have any of the symptoms, follow the instructions of the GGD.

Check the RIVM website and contact a doctor by phone.
Stay at home and work from home in consultation with your employer.

The most important measures you can take to prevent the spread of the coronavirus are:

  • Wash your hands regularly
  • Cough and sneeze into the inside of your elbow.
  • Use paper tissues.

These measures apply to all viruses that can cause flu and colds. It is therefore always important to follow them.

As an employer, we will always follow the advice of the RIVM.

Finally, our advice to employers:
How should you, as an employer, deal with employees who experience symptoms:

  • May an employee stay home out of fear of infection? No, unless there is good reason for that fear.
  • If schools close and the child needs to be cared for, does the employee have the right to continued pay? Yes, for a short period, to arrange care elsewhere.
  • And after that? Take leave in consultation with the employer, usually unpaid.
  • If an employee must be quarantined, do they have the right to continued pay? Yes.
  • May an employee refuse quarantine or medical examination? Yes, but not if they pose a serious danger and it is imposed by a judge.

If you have any further questions, you can always contact the case manager at De Verzuimmakelaar.
