How do you distinguish yourselves from other occupational health services? I get this question regularly. Understandable, because there are quite a few. What we are especially good at is using our common sense. Absence and reintegration guidance is always tailor-made. If you choose a personal and practical approach from day one, it will pay off in the end.

De-medicalization: what is possible
The Gatekeeper Improvement Act holds no secrets for us, nor does labor law. We ensure that procedures are followed correctly. The tailor-made aspect lies in the person, the sick employee who wants to get back to work. We de-medicalize, do not focus on the complaint, and look at what is possible. I am convinced that the employee knows best what the job entails and what his or her body can handle. Taking this seriously is our starting point.
Time, attention, and conviction
From an early stage, we ensure that employer and employee sit down together. Continuing to work despite limitations is the goal. We have no opinion about the limitations; that task is assigned to doctors and psychologists. It is important to approach such a conversation about suitable work with care. Patience is a virtue here: employees can sense if an employer does not take them seriously or wants to take the easy way out. Even if you struggle with the situation, applying pressure is counterproductive. You are more likely to achieve your goal if you devote time and attention to the employee and are truly convinced that you are working together towards the best solution.
Communication is crucial
Building suitable work and making concrete agreements about it can be a huge pitfall for the employer. Suitable work may mean that the employee gets a different position or works in a different department. Properly guiding this step is largely about good communication. Announce the new colleague to the department, clearly explain what is intended, and do not beat around the bush.
A practical approach
At De Verzuimmakelaar, we are good at approaching the entire situation around absenteeism in a practical way. If you handle it well from day one, you can save a lot of money. By involving us, you can bridge the gap more easily; sometimes it’s the little things that cause friction. With careful absence guidance, you gain more commitment and achieve full employability sooner.

Make sure you ask the right questions during the initial conversation when reporting sick. Case managers Anique (anique@deverzuimmakelaar.nl) and Myrtille (myrtille@deverzuimmakelaar.nl) have a handy format for this: feel free to ask them about it.
If you want to be sure that the discussions are conducted efficiently and carefully and that the agreements on employability are properly recorded, ask us for expert support.
If you get stuck on a case, feel free to contact us. We can provide you with quick, concise advice. You do not need to be affiliated with an occupational health and safety service.
